ATI, the graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices, will delay the release of the long-awaited code-named R600 graphics processing unit (GPU), sources said on late Tuesday. The delay is likely to impact sales of the company’s graphics cards during the quarter, as despite of low volume, the high-end graphics card come at a high price.
Officials from Advanced Micro Devices confirmed the product delay saying that the code-named R600 has been delayed due to strategy-related reasons and a wish to address broader market segments. “To better align our strategy with current market opportunities, we’ve changed the launch plan for R600. We are going to deliver a competitive configuration to market with an extremely attractive combination of performance, features and pricing, targeting a broader market segment in Q2,” a statement by the company reads. The news are true, but i am socked if the product is ready why not release it ?
"To better align our strategy with current market opportunities" is not a very cool excuse for all the people who wait so many months. Btw i want to remind you when we first heard about R600 ati/amd said it would ship by the Q4 2006 nVidia is celebrating today and i don't blame them. Now even i am thinking to buy 88xx if the first dx10 games come before the R600 release.

According to ATI/AMD they're going to wait until Q2 before releasing the R600. Well we're already half way through Q1. Even if R600 gets released at the end of Q2, we would only have to wait until the end of June. |

News of the delay was first rumoured over at the Inquirer, then blogged over at Engadget and finally landed in our Back Page News subforum. According to the original source, the “R600 presentation and introduction is pushed to a later date. It is pushed back for launch in Q2 and this comes officially from AMD.” I hesitated to write about this unfortunate report, but now I have no choice. It looks like AMD’s first DirectX 10-compatible card isn’t yet on its way. According to ExtremeTech’s Loyd Case, ATI (AMD’s graphics division) representatives personally and officially confirmed that cards based on the chip have been delayed. ExtremeTech’s article went on to say that unconfirmed problems hinted at “a respin of the silicon”. NVIDIA must have tears in their eyes, from laughing so hard.
