The price difference between 512MB GDDR-3 and 1GB of GDDR-4 memory is around 110 US Dollars, and you can get two in Crossfire, thus ending up with 2GB of video memory in a single system.
Source ATI IS GOING to be launching the 1GB version of the 2900XT really soon. Theo pointed out that it is available now, and vendors at Computex tell me the launch is the 14th +/- a few days. Source

isn't a gig of ram a little overkill for somethings? I guess if you do heavy graphics or something, but then again, there are cards for that exact purpose. Well the x2900 is just a disappointments to me. Unless they make something that is comparable to a 8800gts 640 for slightly cheaper (640 is about 50 bucks to expensive) then I'd go for it.. but c'mon guys.
