News Microsoft Posts Windows XP SP3 RC2 for Public Download

On Tuesday, Microsoft posted a new version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) for public consumption. The new build, Release Candidate 2 (RC2), was previously released to a private group of beta testers on Feb. 7th.

You'll get the new SP3 build through Windows Update, by going to the download page and downloading and running a small script that sets a registry key, indicating to Windows Update that you are allowed to get the build.

Interestingly, Microsoft also posted the SP3 release notes today, for the first time. This could be a harbinger of a release soon.

On the other hand, Microsoft has stuck to a vague delivery date of the first half of 2008, so who knows.

And Windows XP's next big deadline after the SP3 release will be June 30th - when it will be removed from reseller and retail availability lists. Unless, of course, Microsoft relents, as many analysts and end users want it to, and agrees to continue selling it for a longer period.
